We have mice in residence; not only have we caught one, Karen and Denis during their tenure caught two and there is another, 007 mouse, taking food from the traps without triggering them, climbing the piping in the corner cupboard and stopping, brazenly, half way up to stare at us and, finally, putting in an appearance crossing the bedroom floor in the middle of the night.
We're not alone, the hardware store has a "Special" running on mouse-traps at the moment!
Which I know because I went for more supplies; for the porch is running on apace. It doesn't look very different but the in-fill pieces take an age and the "wriggly bit" which abuts the house logs is a nightmare! The modern way is simply to cut a slot in the logs but I don't want to do that.
We are 3/8 of an inch out (more of the inch thing later!) on two 2 x 3 battens, so I finished the day by going over to Mark's for him to plane them down. It happened to be Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement, when Jews at least spend a day in quiet reflexion. So we did; reflect that is. It was very good to recognise our thankfulness for who we are, how our respective lives have turned out; where we are in residence and situation. Thank you Mark for sharing that.
As I came home, these two guys were coming up the old driveway. We exchanged head dips; they're very like horses in language.
Yes, there are two, in plain sight!
There is a bit of further batten-adding to do, some panels presently end on nothing firm.....
And the rafters need doubling; they're not strong enough as they are.
Thursday, 20th September.
I haven't written much, if at all, about the turkeys! Well, the turkeys are an undoubted success story. Two adults with this lot on the meadow, and we've seen far more together at times!
But look also at the leaves - shedding before turning; funny season this.
We went into St Jovite to see Denis - in fact to have a delightful Italian lunch with him, Karen is still in Alberta - and also to the insurance broker, Lucie Seguin who, remarkably, greeted us in English this time. In fact despite the fallacious ban on "Bonjour, Hi" passed in the Quebec parliament earlier in the year - I think essentially to embarrass the Liberal Premier - there seem to be more people using more English this trip than previously. Only an impression, mind. We wanted her to add Wanda and Rod in Montreal to the car insurance; we're going to try leaving the car out of doors with them for the winter, so that they can keep it moving. Can't be worse than the last few years.
And then, with wonderful help over lunch from Denis and in Rona from the man at the roofing desk we bought all sorts of materials to make a roof!
Back via Marcel to collect the re-tubed Quad tyre and then home to work until nightfall, Ali fitting a beastie guard beneath the deck, me cutting "wiggly" bits in both chipboard and facing to fit the logs. Rain's forecast overnight so we sort of tarped the whole thing as some hope of a deterrent......
We (I) got a bit ratty towards the end - thank heaven for yesterday's rat stew!
